Round trip? Never average the speeds
The trap"A jeepney travels to the next town at 60 kph and returns along the same road at 40 kph. What is its average speed for the whole trip?"
Most students answer 50 kph — and 50 is always one of the choices. It is always wrong.
The shortcut2ab / (a + b) the average speed for a round trip at speeds a and b — no distances needed
- Multiply the speeds: 60 × 40 = 2400
- Double it: 2 × 2400 = 4800
- Divide by the sum of the speeds: 4800 ÷ (60 + 40) = 4800 ÷ 100
48 kph Ten seconds, no equations — and the real answer is always below the plain average, so you can eliminate half the choices instantly.

What a review sheet looks like
- To factor x² + bx + c, find two numbers with sum b and product c — then it is (x + p)(x + q).
- The discriminant b² − 4ac tells you the roots before you solve: positive → two real roots, zero → one, negative → none.
